Unprepared, Yet Responsible. Advancing Addiction Education for Counselors-in-Training and Supervisors
Friday, March 13, 2026 | 12pm ET / 1pm CT
Presented by Kari Harburn, MA, LPC, CAADC, CCS and Tiffany K. Lee, PhD, LPC, CAADC
Accredited counselor education programs are required to provide addiction training to all students, regardless of specialization (CACREP, 2024), and counselors who offer supervision are expected to have the necessary addiction-related knowledge and skills to effectively do so (SAMHSA, 2021). Yet, mental health professionals continue to report a lack of training opportunities in their degree studies and a desire to have had gained more competency in specific addiction-related areas such as co-occurring disorders, clinical interventions and techniques, and treatment modalities (Lee, 2025). This webinar will present results from a recent study of over 300 licensed counselors in Michigan pertaining to (a) the amount and satisfaction of addiction education received, (b) their perceived knowledge and skills of various topics, and (c) the rates within the workforce that hold an addiction credential. Next, the attendees will be provided with a general overview of the supervision requirements for those pursuing addiction credentialing within the states comprising the North Central Association for Counselor Education and Supervision. The presenters will conclude with a discussion of the implications and recommendations for counselor education programs as well as for supervisors who oversee the work of professionals aspiring to be credentialed in the addiction field.
The Status of Suicide Preparation and Training in Counselor Education
Friday, April 10, 2026 | 12pm CT / 1pm ET
Presented by Kristin Bruns, PhD, LPCC, Emily Herman-McMillan, Ph.D., LPC, LSC, and Christine A. McAllister, MSEd, LPCC, NCC
Many counselors report suicide as a stressful clinical experience, as well as an area where they did not feel well-prepared. There are only two CACREP Standards that specifically address suicide preparation. To date, counselor education literature has minimal consistency in the approach to suicide training/preparation methods. The authors present results of a study in which they examined suicide preparation practices in 51 CACREP-accredited master’s level Clinical Mental Health counseling programs and conducted a content analysis of 16 courses. Implications for counselor education will be presented.
Integrating Wearable Technology in Counseling
Friday, May 29, 2026 | 12pm CT / 1pm ET
Presented by Taylor Bigelow, PhD, LPC, NCC
Wearable technology is rapidly reshaping how counselors understand, assess, and support client wellbeing. From smartwatches to built-in mindfulness applications, devices like the Apple Watch now generate rich physiological data that can meaningfully inform clinical work when used ethically and intentionally.
In this webinar, Dr. Taylor Bigelow, Ph.D., LPC, NCC will present preliminary research examining the clinical utility of wearable technology in counseling settings. Participants will explore how biometric data, particularly heart rate variability (HRV) collected through the Apple Health app, can be integrated as a complementary form of assessment and biofeedback in clinical mental health counseling.
Attendees will gain a practical understanding of how wearable biofeedback can enhance case conceptualization, support client self-awareness, and inform treatment planning, especially in work related to stress, anxiety, emotion regulation, and mindfulness-based interventions. The session will also address ethical considerations, clinical limitations, and best practices for integrating wearable health technology into counseling work.
This webinar is designed for counselors, counselor educators, supervisors, and mental health professionals interested in bridging technology, data-informed practice, and client-centered care.
